Fortuny Forever

Mariano Fortuny was a Spanish fashion designer that became famous in the early 1900's for his classic pleating techniques. This look has been cycled back through fashion multiple times since then and will forever remain a classic look. This is an image of one of his most famous tea gown designs:

Another fashion designer known for this look is Mary McFadden. She is pictured here at an awards ceremony wearing one of her couture creations:

This "Fortuny" fabric is wonderful to work with! It is easy to sew, easy to care for, the pleats will never come out, and it does not ravel. (Talk about a dream fabric!) Here are a handful of the colors and textures that are currently available @ Fabrique! We have shiny, dull, metallic and semi-sheer. Pocket Love

Pockets are such a fun, functional addition to any garment! Some pockets are in-your-face as the focus of the garment and some pockets you don't even realize are there until you try it on! Pockets are becoming a huge trend in weddings, t-shirts, dresses and even swimwear! There are so many easy ways to embellish a pocket without it becoming too "crafty". At times, sewing pockets can be somewhat intimidating. There are several tools to help sewers create the perfect pocket. Some of these include: the pocket maker, bamboo stiletto, and a pocket template. In the shirt making class, the patch pocket is demonstrated and practiced. This post is to encourage you to think outside the box. What could you do to a pocket to make it different? Here are some great images to start your pocket tangent! 3 Jackets, 1 Pattern!

With one pattern: Vogue #8673 Melanie Fredrickson has created 3 totally unique jackets!

"Salt & Pepper" A black and white satin evening jacket.

This jacket features a sharp contrast of white in the asymmetrical collar and exaggerated cuffs with black jeweled buttons.

The back of the jacket entices the eye with a black metallic dot in the center panel, and side panels of white satin overlay-ed with black dotted mesh. The yoke features a white knit splashed with silver dots and lines overlay-ed with a sheer panel of black mesh embellished with soutash trim.

The left front is white stretch satin which has been pin-tucked and then overlay-ed with black silk organza and edged with a beaded and

stone trim. The final flourish is a large black zipper flower hiding the snap closure underneath.

"City Scape's" A wearable art jacket in wool.

The City Scape jacket is constructed with a double faced wool in colors of chocolate brown and thistle.

Skyscrapers are made with strips of silk dupioni embellished with free motion stitching in dark brown rayon

thread. Each buildings is inserted between the two layers of wool with decorative stitching around each side.

Buildings are 'lighted' with swarovski crystals. The lining inside the jacket is a wonderful silk named Shabby Chic that picks up

all the colors in the jacket. This jacket was made with long sleeves. Collar and cuffs are embellished with the selvage edge

of the fabric and horizontal strips of silk dupioni.

"Plum Delicious" Plum and gold brocade jacket.

This lovely jacket is the same pattern without the collar and has 3/4 length sleeves.

A simple pattern featuring a beautifully designed brocade fabric. The back of the brocade

is fused with feather fuse and then underlined with silk organza. This give the jacket body,

crisp seams and sharp points and edges. The fabric was laided out to have the feature design

in center back first a a focal point, then matching each front and side pieces as close as possible to carry the

design through the jacket and sleeves. Five black and bronze toned buttons are placed close together

on the diagonal jacket front. Lined with black Bemberg rayon.

Indian Inspriation

There are so many cool interpretations of Indian saris. All saris have blocks of designs embroidered, stamped or painted onto woven fabrics. This will allow you to turn pattern pieces cross-grain in order to play with the design placement for a garment. We currently have 8 different saris ranging from $90-$135. Each sari ranges in length from 4.5-6 yds and are sold as entire pieces.

Using sari fabric instantly creates a one of a kind outfit. You can dress it up or dress it down! Finding the perfect pattern for these amazing pieces are essential. Keeping the garment simple will allow the design of the sari to shine! Adding trims and combining the sari fabric with other fabrics will create an over the top look for a wearable art piece! Sewing Workshop patterns would be an interesting option for some of these amazing pieces... the creative possibilities are ENDLESS!

Chapter 11: How to Be Your Own Stylist

"Keeping in step with style can be an adventure. But there is a difference between being fashionably dressed and being a slave to fashion. The style-conscious woman does not accept every fashion fad in toto, whether it is becoming or not. She learns where to look for changing style trends and then adapts them to best advantage to her own figure. Thus she becomes her own stylist and is able to give her clothes that subtle "something different" which is so important in achieving a distinctive appearance.

The woman who makes her own clothes has several advantages over the woman who must buy the style nearest to her requirements and then pay to have it altered, or who must pay the high cost of having a couturier design her wardrobe. Not only can she wear clothes which would be far beyond what she could afford to buy, but she has added satisfaction of knowing that they are designed for her figure alone, not for a general category of women's figures.

A woman who decides to be her own stylist must do three things: she must learn what style notes to look for and where the first appear; how to adapt fashions to suit her own figure; and how to use a basic pattern. Needless to say the fashionable woman is also one whose clothes fit the occasions for which she wears them. In the following chapter you will learn what points to consider in planning your wardrobe to suit your mode of life. So for the present we need consider only the factors we have just mentioned."

One of our customers found this book at an estate sale. After reading a few pages here or there, it was decided we must share some of it! It is so fun to look back at the similarities and differences in a sewer's perspective over time!

New Year Resolutions: Picking the Right Class for YOU!

The new year is just around the corner. Now is the time to pull out that calendar and ask yourself "What do I want to learn next year?" We have so many classes and events to offer and it can get a little overwhelming at times. Our goal is not to overwhelm you, but to do the exact opposite- help you learn!

The first step is to figure out where your skill is TODAY. Then ask yourself where you want to be...

-If you have never sewn a stitch... the Beginner Class with Carol is a great place to start- young or old. The Intermediate Class will be your second step and from there you can create your first garment by taking the Skirt Class! After doing all three steps, you'll be on your way to sewing a whole new wardrobe!

-If you have been sewing for 1 week to 40+ years... The $10 classes are offered each week and each week there is a different topic! They are currently being offered Thursday evenings @ 6:00pm! Whether you are new to sewing or have been sewing for years, I guarantee you will get a nibble of knowledge you didn't know before each time you come!

-If you have garment pattern experience and want to learn how to alter patters or have personal slopers... The Pattern Making courses are what you need! There are 3 levels of Pattern Making: Skirt, Bodice and Sleeve (easiest to hardest). This course uses the Pattern Making book sold here at Fabrique as a guide, but no purchase is necessary for the class. It was written by the instructor Carol Foley.

-If you want to brush-up, update or speed-up your sewing skills... Express Sewing is the most valuable class for you! This class is filled with Lora's secrets to fast, accurate sewing. This is not 'grandma's sewing methods'. It is for the sewers of TODAY!

-If you want to learn only what YOU want to learn... One on one classes are available with Lora. Her classes are $58 and 2 hours long. The best way to describe this class is- you can bring ANYTHING to the table- she has done it all!

-If one of your 2011 goals is to complete a couture garment... Take the Chanel Jacket class. Not only will you walk away knowing the methods and techniques of Chanel, you will know more about Coco and perspective on fashion too!

-If you are scared of knits... Don't be! Take the Stay Tape ($10 class) and Knit class and your fear will slowly dissolve into quick and easy garment making!

Sewing Through the Ages

Wow, sewing has changed! Today when you sew a garment, you want it to look "store bought". It needs to look like something you would pick off a rack and want to buy. The construction methods are not what they taught in the 50's or 60's. Today's tools are available for faster, easier assembly. The methods are streamlined and not necessarily the steps that are indicated in a commercial pattern. Sewing machines are easier to use. They are so easy, you can concentrate on construction and not the function of the machine. Today people sew for the satisfaction of creating with our hands- something beautiful! We want to have something unique and not compromise in color or design details. You can choose quality fabrics that will LAST. This makes it all worth it!

Put yourself into the chart. Are you finding yourself mainly on the left hand side?! Update your tools and methods- it will surprise you! Not only will you sew more quickly, but you'll love the way your final product turns out!

Vintage Pattern

Vintage patterns are so fun! Not only are they inspiring to look at, but they are incredible to sew! Pattern sizing has not changed since the 1960's. The pattern sizing was standardized in November of 1968, which means you won't have to convert sizing when picking your pattern size! We have compiled a list of wonderful vintage pattern sites. Each of them offer different styles, focus on different features and they are all extremely interesting to surf through!

So Vintage Patterns -very well organized, easy to search and find, reasonable to high prices, 1930’s-1990’s

Mom's Patterns -very well organized, easy to search and find, reasonable to high pricing, 1940’s – 2000’s

Grandma's House- well organized, large variety and a links page full of odds and ends websites, reasonable pricing, 1920’s-Today

Stitches & Loops- harder to filter through, however it definitely has some hidden treasures! Prices are reasonable. In fact, I found a pattern I could not live with out! I plan on making it out of the gorgeous teal virgin wool (found @ Fabrique!). It is going to be such a classic piece- I can't wait for the pattern to arrive!

It makes sense that vintage patterns are still around and so popular. They don't make them like they used to! Most vintage pattern instructions are much more clear and detailed than they come now. The looks are CLASSIC looks that are still worn today. Now it's time for YOU to fall in love with a pattern and get started on your classic fall piece that you will cherish forever!

Fantastic Feathers!

This season we are seeing feathers EVERYWHERE! Feathers are an easy design accent and can really jazz up a casual garment.

Fabrique offers so many different fun feather trims! They are all attached to a ribbon which makes the application a cinch! Add them anywhere: sleeves, skirt hems, collars or even a headband!

CARE TIP: You CAN wash feathers! If birds survive a rain, then so can these real feather trims! A gentle wash every now and then never hurts!

LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD...

By using light weight notions! We carry several hard to find notions that can come in very handy when working on your project this fall.
Black and white fusible "feather weight" interfacing would be great for your tropical weight wools and semi-sheer fabrics. Use this interfacing as you would use french fuse because it has a little stretch.
Light weight elastic is very sheer and is ok against the skin. This would be great for gathering, waistbands or even headbands!
Japanese "extra fine" fusible stay tape is virtually invisible. It would be an excellent stabilizer for light weight knits or even lingerie.
Japanese hand sewing needles are so fine they will slide through fabric like butter!
We also carry serger cones that have 6000 yards of thread wound on each cone! The thread is a finer denier than the Mettler Metrosene. This will allow the seam allowance to be made with less bulk.
Organic cotton voile and cotton mousseline are very light weight and soft. These would be great underlinings or perfect for heirloom sewing projects.

By taking out bulk during construction, you will find yourself more pleased with the end result. Bulky seams and the wrong type of interfacing is a sure sign of the "loving hands at home" look! Come in and see these items for yourself- you will be amazed!

From Moth to Cloth, A Silk Seminar by Michael Cook

What an amazing seminar! Michael kept us entertained from beginning to end. He had the cutting table full of silk items- worms, cocoons, moths, spinning wheels, silk art, etc which we all got to touch and see up close! By the end of the seminar it was evident that Michael's knowledge of silk comes from his passion for the entire silk process. How to get the design to... MAKE IT WORK!

What comes first- the design or the fabric? When planning a garment, some people choose a fabric and then search for the perfect pattern. Others choose the pattern and then pick the fabric. Either way is correct!

If you choose the fabric first, there are a couple of things to consider: the care and the characteristics of the fabric. If you plan on wearing it everyday, make sure it is an easy care fabric- you'll end up enjoying it ten times more! Be careful you are not asking the fabric to change character. A soft fabric that drapes is not meant to become a structured garment. A heavy fabric will not be soft a supple.

If you choose the pattern first, check the suggested fabrics that are on the envelope. Now think out of the box! Not ALL the acceptable fabrics are listed. Many of the designs that are currently in the stores are not what might be suggested. For example, it is OK to do a duster out of organza as a surprise! Zero in on a design element that pleases you and expand on that. You are the "designer" and today's fashion is open to new, intriguing interpretations.

A good rule of thumb: a knit pattern can only be paired with a knit fabric, but a woven pattern can be paired with a woven fabric or a knit fabric. A woven pattern has the ease built into the pattern where a knit pattern assumes the ease will come from the fabric.

Take the mystery out of commercial patterns!

     I remember my grandmother opening a sheet of newspaper to make a pattern piece for her new dress. In rural America a pattern was a luxury and expensive. When you could buy one, they were not printed. A letter or number was punched into it and that was the only way anyone know what the piece was. You had to add the seam allowances of course. The instruction sheet was minimal. Pattern companies got better. They printed them with information so it became easier to assemble. They were one size and had seam lines as well as cutting lines.

     In November 1968 the major pattern companies agreed to standardize the sizing. They adhere to those measurements today. When you go shopping you might buy and 8 or 10, but the pattern size you buy will be a 14 or 16. Yuck!!! (That is vanity sizing!) Remember ladies- it is just a number. Designers decided they could sell more if you thought you were a smaller size.

     During the mid 80’s the multi-size patterns became popular. They eliminated the sewing line marks and offered that a pattern with 3 or even 4 sizes had cutting lines only. Now we have patters with 8 or 10 sizes all printed on the same paper. Patterns were never meant to come out of their envelopes, cut and sew straight to a finished garment. They are a start- and idea. It is a process and the first step is to sew up the main body pieces in an inexpensive fabric like muslin. Then you get to be the designer!

     About 10 years ago the McCall’s Pattern Company bought VOGUE and Butterick. They all moved to Manhattan, Kansas. The patterns are all drafted on computers and they try to follow the standard sizes that were established in the 1960’s. From my experience, the “very easy” patterns don’t always turn out to be “very easy”!! They offer construction techniques that skip steps in order to call it a “very easy” pattern. Today you can sew faster, more accurately and with less frustration. There are new tools i.e.: sergers and rotary cutters that aid you in making a quality made garment.     We don’t sew like grandmother did any more. Come in for a sewing lesson and update your skills! The original November 1968 VOGUE pattern book will be in the store for anyone to see the pattern changes that were made. It is very interesting and extremely inspiring!!!

A PRESSING ISSUE

You can take your garment from looking homemade to looking couture simply by PRESSING! Take a look at these two shirts. They are the EXACT same fabric and pattern. One was pressed correctly and the other was not pressed at all! I think the results speak for themselves...

A few pressing steps:
1st-Set the seam leaving the fabric exactly how it was sewn
2nd-Press seam. Which direction should you press? Down or to the center of the body (press open only when indicated)
3rd-Press the outside of the garment using a pressing cloth. The BEST pressing cloth is silk organza!

2 DIFFERENT LOOKS, ONE PATTERN!

Helen McCleneghen created 2 completely different looks simply by changing the fabric! She used Vogue pattern 8645 shown on the right, to create these day and night looks. Come check out our window display!

Her "day" look (right) is made with an orange and white oxford stripe cotton that was actually one of our remnants-what a great use for a remnant! The second look is the "night" (left) made with a gorgeous floral pattern silk charmeuse. Both of these dresses are great for so many different summer events- everything from lunch to a wedding!

Depression era designs are inspirational for the fashion trends today!

The great depression that preceded World War II is ultimately known for the world wide economic downturn. That same depression era was also called the "Stylish Thirties." Many great designers would flourish during this time. Two of the more popular designers were Madeline Vionnet who was known for the "cross cut bias method" and Elsa Schiaparelli who invented the zipper.

Womens clothing of this era was very sleek and feminine. Figures were shown, even accentuated. Accessories such as small plate shaped hats were commonly used. The evening boasted glamorous garments which usually shimmered and were adorned with sequins and glass beads.

By mimicking sleek lines and using chic accessories, the stylish thirties can be portrayed in todays trends in a very fashionable way!

The LITTLE BLACK DRESS

Okay sew great fashion bloggers...You have a night on the town, a gala, or whatever you might have it, and that horrendous question that boggles our mind arises..."WHAT DO I WEAR?"

You plough through a million blouses, skirts, and dresses, and still nothing seems to suit. Then with a defeatist attitude, you walk to the back of your closest and say "I guess I'll wear this black dress, ahh."

Well no worries ladies, whatever age you are the L.B.D is a FAVORITE always safe, and can be dolled up any way.

Maybe you are blessed to walk to the first outfit or dress and pull things together in a whim but many of us RACK our brains for the intent of finding that perfect garment.

I just wanted to say it is okay to pull out or MAKE that little black dress that has an endless amount of opportunity.

Where it all started

Different women all shape, ages, and sizes: how they wear it

I love the black dress because since it is black, pops of color really can turn a look from drab to fabulous!

For instance, wear your dress with a plum shoe or any color to turn up the edge.

~Add black tights or any color that compliments the shoe.

~For a conservative or sensual look, wear the black dress with a nude shoe, open toe, peep toe, or pointed to exaggerate the line of your leg.

~ Also for another conservative look, you can stay all black but play with touches of color in your make up or maybe an earring. This works at any age!

ALWAYS REMEMBER!

The FIT is one of the most important elements of the black dress. We want to see shape...Not a black potato sack! Whatever size or age you are, you can flatter your body by having the dress fit properly in the right places. Choose a length that you are comfortable with too and that your body will appreciate. Too long reads formal, and too short screams bachelorette party!

You want to find a median length that will suit many occasions, because more than likely you will be wearing this dress more than once!

Have fun with the dress and play up your accessories, hair, or make-up. Just because you are wearing black does not mean you have to take the look seriously!

Fabrique Fashion Forecast- Spring/Summer 2010:

It is all about COLOR! Color is emotional. Color catches the eye and can lift your mood. Colorful clothing is essential in today’s market!

The biggest color now is GREEN. Any shade of green- even neon has become a ‘basic’ for this upcoming season. Green works well with soft refined pinks and the neutral tones. Yellow remains exciting. Marigold, daffodil and always butter yellow.

If you wear a lot of black you need a pop of a shocking color in at least one accessory.

Clothing should look effortless. Drapey jersey, soft gathers, and tucks that fall close to the body are great on many women. Knits are good transitional pieces and very easy to sew.

Small details that many designers agree are new looking for spring 2010. Circle cut ruffles that are inserted in seams give a soft feminine touch. Pleated ruffles on bows in surprising places give the eye a pop of interest. Cording in a seam can define the lines of a dress or break up a floral pattern. Mire floral patterns, they don’t have to even look like they together and they will!

The trench coat is a blockbuster for this spring. We love all the defining details and it can flatter any shape or size at any age. The interpretation can be traditional beige or tomato red. Pockets, epaulets, and all that top stitching make it a project worth your time.

Feathers are showing up in prints or sewn on to fabrics. Feathers everywhere you look are fresh and fashion forward.

Sleeves are detailed and made special with lace or gathers. Never let your sleeves be plain!

This season you can expand your wardrobe by sewing a few key pieces that make you feel confident, pretty, and fashionable. If you start with a color that excites, you then find a design detail that you can master. Now go forth and SEW!!!

CUSTOMER SPOTLIGHTS!

We absolutely LOVE when our customers show us the work they have done with our fabrics! It is very interesting to see what happens to a gorgeous fabrication when different hands have molded it into a living garment.

This week we turned our spotlight on Becki Berri for the unique and intricate creation made for her daughter. She pieced together many fabrique fabric pieces and long and behold a jacket was born!

She came to us during the process to show us what she was up to. Not too much later, she provided us pictures of the garment when it was all done. We love to see what our customers have produced. Awesome job Becki!
